There's an old adage in software development that I refer to all the time: The first 90% of development takes 90% of the time. And I use it all the time now when I get the kind of message that I received: I'm looking for a web developer to continue work on my website. The remaining 10%, takes the other 90% of the time.

As a long-time business advisor and angel investor, I’m a believer that “two heads are better than one” in building a new business. The reason is that good attributes apply equally well to “external” partners, as they do to internal partners, like a co-founder or CTO. This is probably the best place to apply your “gut” feeling.

Not only do our business clients turn to us for lawsuits, but they also ask us to create efficient processes and develop their brands. We are not “finders” and usually serve the role of advisor and attorney. So, we both turned down job offers to create a new kind of practice – we are true “advocates.”

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit. Accounting?

Meredith came to see me along with the CTO Marc Berte. The more we dug the more confident we became (and so did every advisor we used). With Meredith I did every on-reference-sheet call I could make and many off-reference-list calls. We hired OSHA regulatory lawyers. We hired IP specialists to review prior art.
