As I discussed in Matching Algorithm , I end up talking to a lot of startups who want to become the eHarmony of careers, eHarmony of clothes, eHarmony of jobs, eHarmony of tutoring, eHarmony of services, eHarmony of investments, etc. So, it makes it much harder to predict, test and scale a network effect startup.

Of course, you can always argue that each was just in the right place at the right time, or was lucky, or had a rich uncle to get them started, but it would be smarter to listen to the messages: You need enough capital and a little more. I always discount compliments I get from customers because I think a lot of times they’re just being nice.
