Santa Barbara-based cloud computing management software firm RightScale is linking its products into IBM DB2, one of the major enterprise database software packages, the firm said today. RightScale said it will support creating, managing, and automating IBM DB2 Express-C on such services as Amazon EC2.

When we talk about cloud computing we have to be careful to differentiate between open cloud (services the are provided solely to for the economic purpose of building a cloud business) and the “platform cloud&# where certain service providers offer cloud services wrapped around their core product. These are very different.

I believe that this is a major new area of growth & innovation for the Internet as Cloud Services start to form deeper & richer layers. I’m not covering the actual layers of the Internet (under the OSI model) but rather the Cloud Services layer. At the time we viewed Amazon’s offering, EC2 as too nascent.
