Santa Monica-based venture capital firm Rustic Canyon Partners has upped its investment in social games firm PlayFirst , which is based in San Francisco. According to PlayFirst, Rustic Canyon, Mayfield Fund, Trinity Partners, and DCM--all current investors in the game developer--have invested $5.2M

Michael Kim , a partner at Santa Monica-based Rustic Canyon Partners , is departing the firm at the end of the year to startup up a new fund-of-funds, Cendana Capital. According to Kim, he will become an Advisory Partner to Rustic Canyon, and transfer his responsibilities at Rustic Canyon by the end of the year.

The VC industry grew dramatically as a result of the Internet bubble - Before the Internet bubble the people who invested in VC funds (called LPs or Limited Partners) put about $50 billion into the industry and by 2001 this had grown precipitously to around $250 billion. So the people who invest in VC funds have two problems.
