By the mid-nineties we had the World Wide Web, which gave us a standard way to publish web pages using HTML. At the bottom end of the stack is storage (S3) and processing (EC2). Smart people understood that people still wanted to accomplish on the world wide web all of things that we did in the pre-Internet world.
