Traditional media companies published their stories on the web. People rightly recognize that comments on blogs are just a form of a stream and thus the growth of open commenting platforms like Disqus and IntenseDebate. As John Battelle chronicles in his brilliant (and must read) book, The Search , Google thought this idea stunk.
