A few years ago it became fashionable for large VC’s to do seed funding. But I’m no longer an entrepreneur – I’m a VC at a $200 million fund called GRP Ventures , the largest active fund in Southern California. Many VCs who do lots of seed stage deals are very supportive and active.

We closed our fund in August of 2008. We're describing ourselves as a micro-cap venture fund, focused on digital media opportunities in the emerging ecosystem of Southern California. We syndicate our rounds so that we are typically raising $750,000 to $1.5M in initial seed funding for an early stage company.

For a high-volume seed fund that adds many portfolio companies every year (such as our friends at 500 Startups who invest in over 100 distinct companies annually), the cost of a bad affirmative decision (a false positive) is quite low, since it accounts for a relatively small portion of their total fund. Professional angels / former entrepreneurs / seed funds – In Silicon Valley there are people like Ron Conway, Jeff Clavier, Mike Maples and many more. In SoCal we have Crosscut Ventures, Matt Coffin, Mike Jones, Klaus Schauser, etc. Also, make sure that your investors are accredited. They exist in every town.

At Sony, he didn’t feel like he could “steer the ship” and get his ideas heard so he left and started GUBA, GUBA had no seed funding. The best proof of a soft circle is whether an angel will email someone else (refer another investor) and start off that email with “I’m investing in…”.
