It’s not publicly known exactly when Google began developing Chrome and Chromium, but it must have been late 2006 or early 2007 since Chrome launched in September 2008. At the time of acquisition, the press primarily asserted that Google bought Motorola to help protect Android’s legal intellectual property in court.
