He didn’t tell it in the video but, ever the entrepreneur, Scott started a business to take couples up on a “mile high club&# flight on airplanes as a way of getting all of his miles logged to get his next class of airplane license that required a certain number of hours logged. And it carries no inventory. Total raised: $17mm.

The speaks to the continued confidence in the venture capital markets and as I had predicted some time ago the VC markets right now are a great place to invest – especially relative to other places to put one’s money. Our last fund we raised was in 2012 and we began investing it in April of 2012. But that’s it.

Closing our inaugural fund was big news for us, but even bigger news in my perspective has been the breakaway performance of many of our investments led by military veteran founders: 1. Those investments are a huge validation of our Fund thesis: investing in Extraordinary Leadership, with a heavy emphasis on military veteran co-founders.

We both wanted to build a practice that would make Los Angeles proud but where we would travel tirelessly to other locations to make investments in the best entrepreneurs wherever they were. Like any firm we of course invest in the San Francisco Bay Area where 33% of my personal boards are. We knew he had to be an investment partner.

Developers ranged from a 18 year old whiz kid to a Yale team who flew in from Yale to participate.

We have world-class universities like Caltech, UCLA, USC and more. When you’re one fund and have $600 million to invest it’s easier to take that kind of risk. LA generally doesn’t have an appetite for this kind of ‘swing-for-the-fences’ investment at early stages – and neither does your town.
