Santa Barbara-based cloud computing management software firm RightScale is linking its products into IBM DB2, one of the major enterprise database software packages, the firm said today. RightScale said it will support creating, managing, and automating IBM DB2 Express-C on such services as Amazon EC2.

Platform cloud players like Salesforce.com provide compute resources so that third parties can build applications that integrate with its core product. Facebook is a “platform cloud&# provider, too. Our chief architect, Ryan Lissack, wanted to store our data in Amazon’s new (at the time) storage product called S3 that enabled us to store all our data in their facility and we’d pay by the MBs uploaded / downloaded. At the time we viewed Amazon’s offering, EC2 as too nascent. I was dead set against it.
