I recently got together with Aaron Shechet and an early stage startup to discuss the direction the company might want to take. We also represent a few larger companies with international issues. We are not “finders” and usually serve the role of advisor and attorney. Tell me a bit about your background.

As a long-time business advisor and angel investor, I’m a believer that “two heads are better than one” in building a new business. The reason is that good attributes apply equally well to “external” partners, as they do to internal partners, like a co-founder or CTO. Believe in the same ethical and diversity boundaries.

There's an old adage in software development that I refer to all the time: The first 90% of development takes 90% of the time. I used a company in India to develop the site, and it's mostly done. The remaining 10%, takes the other 90% of the time. I used this when I taught software engineering. It's currently in beta.

Meredith came to see me along with the CTO Marc Berte. The more we dug the more confident we became (and so did every advisor we used). With Meredith I did every on-reference-sheet call I could make and many off-reference-list calls. We hired OSHA regulatory lawyers. We hired IP specialists to review prior art.

A good early-stage CEO needs to be accessible, to be accountable for producing results and should be establishing the cultural norms of the company through direct leadership at all levels.
