Los Angeles-based venture capital firm GRP Partners has backed a provider of cloud-based databases, MongoLab , in its Series A funding. MongoLab said it has raised $3M in a Series A funding led by The Foundry Group, and including Baseline Ventures, GRP Partners, Freestyle Capital and Bullet Time Ventures. READ MORE>>.

Seed investments are down by any measure (funds, deals, dollars) over the past 3 years in deals < $1 million AND in deals between $1–5 million. As you can see below the number of seed funds shot up dramatically between 2006 and 2014. What gives? Well, both of those things happened but they were lagging indicators.

Morphlabs said that the funding will go to accelerate expansion in the United States and Asia. Morphlabs is developing a cloud-based computing appliance which is used to manage and deploy elastic computing clouds. The round was led by Global Gateway Investment Group (G2iG), and also includes Frontera Group LLC, CSK Venture Capital Co.

A very interesting topic, especially for those of us involved in developing for start-ups. The basic conclusion was that it was a bit premature if you were talking about a serious, funded start-up. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Would never put a user request to an EC2 instance.

The trend of funding anything from the first $25k to funding $50 million at a billion+ valuation is unlikely to last as the skills and style to be effective at all stages are diverse enough to warrant focus. I will argue that LPs who invest in VC funds will also need to adjust a bit as well.
