What I want to answer with this post (long though it may be) is: Why did Web 2.0 Social Networking in Web 2.0. It was: up-market, exclusive, urban, elite, aesthetically pleasing, ad-free and users were verified. Twitter seems to have become a bit allergic to third-party developers (or maybe vice-versa).
