A very interesting topic, especially for those of us involved in developing for start-ups. At the CTO Group that I organize in Santa Monica, we've had lots of discussions around this. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Interestingly it was same developers in both companies.

It launched open API’s and created a platform whereby third-party developers could come build any app they wanted and Facebook didn’t even want (yet) to take any money from them to do so. Yes, social networks of 2010 have much better usability, have better developed 3rd-party platforms and many more people are connected.
