Advertising is also what allows you to watch Hulu for free, use Yahoo! So PPC (pay-per-click) advertising on social networks has performed poorly to date. And if they can monetize their follower base then they have an incentive to grow their base, Tweet more, engage more and write better quality Tweets. Everybody gains.
