At the CTO Group that I organize in Santa Monica, we've had lots of discussions around this. Mentions - Marc Andreessen's - The three kinds of platforms you meet on the Internet A Level 1 platform's apps run elsewhere, and call into the platform via a web services API to draw on data and services -- this is how Flickr does it.

NOT just because they have the best deals on web based business tools. Being that the theme of the night was community, it was perfect that the event was held at CoLoft , a workspace in Santa Monica that focuses on start up entrepreneurs. I am a raving fan of AppSumo.com. Bed Bath and Beyond does it.

Web Services, led by Amazon’s AWS, which reduced the costs a further 90%. A move to more urban environments (SF over SV, Cambridge over Waltham, London over Thames Valley, Santa Monica / Venice, Flatiron and so forth) as basically young people want to live where young people want to live. Frankly, I wish LA had one.
