2001–2007: THE BUILDING YEARS The dot com bubble had burst. SEEING THINGS FROM THE VC SIDE OF THE TABLE While I was a VC in 2007 & 2008 those were dead years because the market again evaporated due the the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Until we weren’t. Nobody cared about our valuations any more. The tide has gone out.

When I first got into the industry it was 2007. Let’s review all of our existing investments. On the positive side, corporate profits are up, their balance sheets have been repaired and they have recapitalized themselves to have lower amounts of debt relative to equity. Not just tech companies but industrials, too.

It helped me avoid chasing deals (and a house) in 2007/08 and it led to GRP’s fastest pace of investment in many years in the first three quarters of 2009 at a time when many others weren’t investing. But imagine a VC that did 12 deals per year in 2006, 2007 & 2008. The deal was done in late 2007.

The company--which is in the business of operating a content delivery network (CDN) to accelerate the delivery of web graphics, multimedia, applications, and more to end users-- recently disclosed it more than doubled its revenues in 2012, and has grown to over 230 employees--all due to a huge amount of demand for CDN services by its customers.

It’s always fun debating companies with Dana because she’s always so knowledgeable on deals – particularly those in the digital media, ad-tech and eCommerce spaces. million users making it considerably larger than some of its peers that have historically received more tech press inches. Founded in 2007. Time will tell.

I know that most people who are close to them tend to deny their existence, as we saw in the great housing bubble of 2002-2007 and the dot com bubble of 1997-2000. Responses ranged from, “hey, they’re in a HUGE market&# to “it is an amazing company and their technology rocks.&# But everything has intrinsic value.
