Our guest this week on #TWiVC was Dana Settle , partner at Greycroft Partners , a venture capital firm with offices in New York and Los Angeles. Greycroft is an early-stage VC. Closing a VC fund in 2009/10 is a major achievement in and of itself. It will be tough for there to be many huge winners in this category.

Of the 80 companies that have completed the program since its 2007 inception, 49 have received funding, 8 have been acquired and 8 have ceased operations. I began our discussion by asking Brad what motivated him to co-author Venture Deals , rather than continuing to share venture capitalists’ secrets via his Ask The VC blog.

I only say that because after years as a VC I can always tell when my peer group invested in something because “it seemed like it would make money” versus when they invested out of passion. On reflection of the role that I want to play as a VC it is clearly in the camp of passion. I’m a VC.

Not since the initial popularity of Twitter in 2007 has a product so befuddled people. Why would a VC do that? If I can help thousands with 5 minutes of my time daily — why the f**k not? I rarely talk to any startup entrepreneur or VC who doesn’t feel it and somehow long for simpler times despite the benefits we all enjoy from increased enthusiasm for our sector. Have a shorter to-do list with more things that are in the “done” category. We are experiencing a frenetic time. Easier said than done.

That’s a bit like imagining Apple launching the 2007 iPhone and then not having 10-years of constant improvements to maintain its market leadership position. When you think about the category of scooters you think about Bird and that becomes a brand your friends want to try. You don’t “Bing” information or “Hulu and chill.”
