They started by offering cloud storage (S3) on a super cheap, pay-as-you consume basis. Not Google. That said, Amazon – through AWS – even without strong competition is as wonderful an experience as Amazon the eCommerce retailer feels to you as an online shopper. They came from a different perspective. Not Microsoft.
