Find a business mentor, as well as a friend. A mentor is someone who will tell you what you need to hear, while a friend might tell you what you want to hear. These include the classes in school that focus on case studies and team exercises, but extend beyond the academic world to professional and industry seminars.

Instead of a traditional business school''s case study and textbook approach, UCSB''s Technology Management Program (TMP) emphasizes experiential learning. In addition to an Undergraduate Certificate, the Program is launching a Master of Technology Management degree in 2015.

The good news is that none of these need be mutually exclusive, according to recent studies of market trends. It’s important to learn from peers, advisors and mentors that the required mindset must be combined with specific actions, including the ones outlined above, before value can be harvested.
