Los Angeles-based StartEngine has raised $5M in funding, according to the company, from SE Agoura Investment LLC (Aubrey Chernick). StartEngine, the onetime startup accelerator, has remade itself as an online, equity crowdfunding site, helping companies to raise money via crowdfunding.

Alex Schneider: It all started in 2003, when the city created an economic development fund worth $5M. It was a kind of rainy day fund, available for economic development purposes. In 2007, we started to put some policy attached to the money, and created a jobs investment fund. The purpose was to deliver high value jobs.
