Hawthorne-based SpaceX has bailed on a pending deal to lease space at the Port of Los Angeles, the second time it has done so in the last year. The withdrawal of SpaceX's lease comes after a massive scramble by the Los Angeles Board of Harbor Commissioners to approve a 10-year agreement with SpaceX in February.

Hawthorne-based SpaceX hope to hire another 700 employees in Los Angeles, at a new site at the Port of Los Angeles, to work on its Mars rocket, according to officials in Los Angeles on Monday.

The move coincides with a number of SpaceX and Tesla-related projects in Texas, the sale of several of Musk’s Los Angeles homes as well as his disagreement with how California public officials have handled the COVID-19 pandemic. His other privately held company, SpaceX, is planning a launch site in Boca Chica, Texas.

Tesla Motors is getting set to launch its newest model--the mass market, Model 3--at an event on March 31st in Los Angeles, in what is expected to be watershed moment for the electric car company. Tesla maintains a small office in Hawthorne, right next to SpaceX, the space rocket company which is also headed by Elon Musk.
