I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. I used an image from Roger Smith that describes the varying roles of a CTO as the company matures.

El Segundo- and Austin-based Slingshot Aerospace says it has named a Board of Advisors, which will provide it with counsel, advice, and support. Slingshot is venture backed by ATX Venture Partners, Revolution's Rise of the Rest Seed Fund, Techstars Ventures, and Okapi Venture Capital, along with others.

We are not “finders” and usually serve the role of advisor and attorney. Sometimes we draft business plans and coach the entrepreneurs on their pitch, and sometimes we even help develop a business model. A few years ago “venture capital” was a revenue model. Many entrepreneurs have an idea but don’t know how to monetize it.

Michael Wong: I was previously CTO of an agency called Breakthrough Ads. My cofounder, Steven Elliott, was CTO of a company doing artificial intelligence and automated chat technology. Since we started our free site last week, we've organically grown faster than we ever thought we would. We're also funding it out of pocket.

Many startups now go through accelerators and have mentors passing through each day with advice – usually it’s conflicting. This is generally how I try to organize my own views and how I try to give advice. He came to me months ago asking about a “strategic round” of capital for his startup at a high price.
