Sure, there are roles like CTO or CIO, but the input and decision making process has remained fairly static. Some of the things that have changed includes their ages, types of experience and the kind of expertise they offer a company. Things have shifted though for companies that are looking for board members.

Every investor expects to see some traction, both before and after a funding event. If you have neither, and choose to approach an investor, you will get no attention, and probably never again get a shot at funding with that investor. Ideally, they will have links to distributors you need, or even be investors in your company as well.
