I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. In industry this is known as “yield management” and of course it needs to exist. I think it’s a beautifully designed site and product. The company was called Red Beacon. I was standing with him when he won the TechCrunch 50 award.

The basic components are obvious: talented founders, great engineers, angel money, venture capital, access to larger corporates (for business, funding & talent), great education / research (for IP breakthroughs) and a sufficient ecosystem of mentors, advisors, executive coaches and mavens. Venture Capital. You also need marketing muscle.

Of course much of it is conflicting. And of course I’ve sat on the other side of the table: As a VC. And of course you’re meeting people who can give you money. When I was reading the Fab.com website I noticed that the CEO refers to Fab’s “one thing” as being design. They think design wins.
