The first Demo Day of 2013 in Los Angeles is tomorrow, as MuckerLab launches its latest class of startups; fellow Los Angeles accelerator StartEngine has its first 2013 demo day scheduled for January 30th. We've defined an accelerator program as a class-based, limited-time program which ties mentors, educational events, and often, seed funding, to help ideas become startups, and to help get startups to the point where they are fund-able. Most are modeled after the YCombinator and TechStars accelerator programs.

With top-ranked accelerators Lauchpad LA closing its doors and Y Combinator rebranding itself as a seed fund, it seems fair to ask the question, “Are Accelerators Dead?”. Convert Graduate-Founders Into Mentors. Bringing an accelerators’ graduates back as mentors provides value to the next class, certainly.

LA-based company, Chewse has joined 500 Startups in Silicon Valley, making it the first starup from LA to join the prestigious accelerator program and seed fund. Chewse now joins the 500 current class commencing today, November 31 with an aim to even be a better marketplace for groups to easily order great food.

We're providing seed funding, office space, and put them through a three month, structured program.

The competition is set up to award $50,000 to the best team each year, and is also tied to a class on entrepreneurship for engineering students. Mentors outside of the university will come and help the innovators and students who have come up with their new ideas, and help them to convert those into professionally prepared business plans.
