These were sports that you taught yourself by watching others, and just pushed yourself to progress for fun, with no coach or parent influencing you. I grew to love many things about skating as I got into the industry I helped to create. I love that there are no coaches, and kids learn how to learn by teaching themselves.

Tyler Crowley, of Sqweal, Launch, ThisWeekInStartups, Open Angel Forum, and Mahalo, stopped by to give a quick coaching session on pitch prep. By 10:00 PM, teams were working away into the night.

The following week, I joined AT&T Hackathon at iO/LA in Hollywood and again pitched the idea. RED FLAG #2 : This person came in saying he was a designer, disappeared for a few hours and said he was working on some iOS mockups but by the time we were ready to pitch, he delivered nothing.

Surprisingly, Hollywood hasnt played a major role in the formation of new companies, which have tended to be in less glamorous though more lucrative areas like lead-generation and service (with obvious exceptions like JibJab and Hulu, a joint venture of Fox and NBC). startup scene so hot.
