Having been both a marketing & sales executive, I have seen first-hand how silos between these two departments can exist while products (or the sale of services) still "succeed" despite the rivalry. Worked at Shearson Mortgage, Basic Four, Madge Networks, CalComp, Ingram Micro, etc. in Woodland Hills.
