The cost of any new product these days must include education and rollout marketing, perhaps equal or greater than the development costs. Solution may require new category development time. If you go this route, make sure your solution is strategic. Your rollout plan needs to factor in these requirements.

Since these usually require a large investment, and more time, including customer education, they need to be started while your current business is still healthy. Redefine your product to reach a new category. Uber added UberLUX, with stylish high-end cars, to declare access to the limousine category.

As I note in MBA Education and Other Oxymorons entry, my roommates and I hosted a weekly poker game while attending Wharton. Amarillo’s advice is consistent with my comments in the Startup Competition ; get to know your competitors on a personal basis, while appearing as innocuous as possible. Poker is one such game.
