I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?

Similar, we also provide information on what publishers are doing. I met my co-founder and CTO, Tom, there, and worked on a bunch of projects together. Tom eventually left to work on a startup, and I started traveling, reconnected with some former mentors, and really started diving into the space.

But the thing I am most proud of about Rob is that he has taken a company with a uniquely talented founder & CTO – Nick Halstead – and managed to build a very tight working relationship with Nick where we drive world-class product development without having the usual founder / CEO conflicts. Ask for short conference calls.

You are constantly faced with decisions and there is always incomplete information. You’re sales person is getting blocked by the CTO who says she shouldn’t go above him but the CTO isn’t approving the deal. Yes, I know it’s my job as the CEO to be the coach for people and that’s fine.

In my case, I had a mentor at the time who helped me understand how there was a parallel between the printing press and the Renaissance, and the Internet as the next step in information and communications. Plus, we were seeing things like the Arab Spring and things like that, where the free flow of information was countering tyranny.
