It’s not clear that there was big customer demand for some of these products yet entrepreneurs were egged on by VCs to “take the money&# and try and push the market. I had my sales teams telling me we needed certain features to be competitive. As we added more resources we added more strain on his high-calibre core team.

Your IT Reviewer. They’ll push you on your uptime SLA, they’ll push for harsher penalties for non-compliance, they demand security reviews … heck – if you’re small enough they’ll push for “ source code deposits.” Procurement (or Biz Dev Team or M&A Department).

Was it a Startup Founder Developer Gap ? Did they really need a Startup CTO or Developer or both? Did they have a Weak Development Team ? Unless you are a co-founder of the startup, a developer is probably not going to do all that well working on sweat equity alone. Was it a case of needing Homework?

Although necessary, “stepping stone” approach of initially utilizing smaller VARs to enter new geographic markets can become problematic as your business grows, because large VARs often demand uncontested, broad, multi-country coverage. This is generally a straightforward and uncontested provision.
