Meredith came to see me along with the CTO Marc Berte. Was there consumer demand? Did anybody hold patents that would prevent us from using this technology? I seldom hire patent attorneys during due diligence but this was too important. The more we dug the more confident we became (and so did every advisor we used).

Another common “failure to start” situation I see is one where the “idea person” insists that the idea is 90% of the value (and 90% of the equity). In the real world, the "idea" is a very small part of the overall equation. Who will be the CEO, CFO, and CTO? Pre-existing intellectual property.
