I've had several Startup CTO Consulting sessions recently where it became apparent that the Founder needed help with the business and product as much or more than the technology. Then we discussed how they could go about finding this startup business advisor. Do you have any suggestions for how to find a good mentor?

That's what Los Angeles-based MergeLocal (www.mergelocal.com) is looking to find out, by offering up points which can be converted to real cash, when users check into local businesses. Michael Wong: I was previously CTO of an agency called Breakthrough Ads. The feedback, mentors, and connections are amazing.

Those who didn’t get a ticket in time, turned to Zaarly where tickets sold on the SUW “grey-market” for up to $450 per ticket (this being up for discussion with potential upcoming policy changes). Ultimately, we're build tools for marketers on top of that. Alex Benzer: My partner and I met here in Los Angeles, in high school. We're definitely Los Angeles natives, but we got the opportunity to do TechStars. We have some great mentors now. It's actually uncommon to have a female CTO.

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit.

He eventually founded and sold consumer health firm ViSalus to a public company and is now back making investments, in technology companies, as a venture capitalist here at Los Angeles-based HashtagOne (www.hashtagone.com). We hired the ex-CTO of Sears, and other senior executives out of Disney in software.

Tech Coast Angel investor Dale Okuno came out because he believes that MuckerLab attracts better talent because they keep their class size small and focused. Okuno has been investing in Los Angeles startups for the past three years after selling his own company E-Z Data. Or maybe a goldmine. He is looking to find more.
