El Segundo-based Morphlabs , the latest startup of Winston Damarillo, is announcing today that it has raised $5.5M Damarillo is best known for founding Gluecode, which he sold to IBM in 2005, and has since been starting up firms whose basis is open source software. in a Series B financing round. WEMO Media is an interesting combination of Hollywood, computer games, and deep technical experience, one of the few companies we have seen which seems to combine both the worlds of high tech and software with content, interactive, and Hollywood. Part of our DNA is pure software engineering, and dealing with that large amount of data.

A very interesting topic, especially for those of us involved in developing for start-ups. The basic conclusion was that it was a bit premature if you were talking about a serious, funded start-up. Especially when there are things like: Amazon S3 / EC2 / AWS outage this morning. Will it survive as long as you need?

However, Metacloud (www.metacloud.com), a startup providing private cloud services, is looking to change the equation and make it much easier for companies to deploy their own private clouds. We think those four dimensions matter because you can sort of mix and match those, and end up with interesting business models.

To address that, Los Angeles-based FileTrek (www.filetrek.com) announced a funding round for its cloud-based software for sharing enterprise and business files yesterday. What our software does, is it allows that collaboration to take place, but also keeps track of that. We also have a web experience, and we host that on Amazon EC2.
