I joined Upfront Ventures in 2007 and took over as co-Managing Partner in 2011 along with the founder, Yves Sisteron. From 2007-2012 I scoured LA constantly. He’s proved much more efficient that I ever was at tracking the activities of the community. He’s pushed us to be out in the community more. I keynoted.

We don''t spend a lot of time there, except that we''re active investors and bankers who are affected by what''s happening in the IPO market. If you rate the market on a one to ten scale, with one being 2002 and ten being 2007, we''re probably at around five or six. That''s fueling lots of the activity we''re seeing now.

But knowing the right people and knowing a market only works well for angel investors in bullish tech markets in which IPO’s happen quickly (97-99) or where larger companies are actively scooping up little tiny companies at sub $50 million valuations to drive innovation (05-08, 10-?). So where are we now? It’s hard to say.

The total number of M&A deals in the US this year is projected to be a paltry 225 transactions relative to more than 450 deals just 2 years ago, which was the norm between 2002-2007, varying only by around 3% per year. Nearly 50% say they will increase their activity levels in 2010 (hallelujah!)

Steve Jillings has a long track record of running successful startups in Southern California, ranging from such companies as FrontBridge Technologies (sold to Microsoft in 2005 for over $200M) and Vantage Media (acquired in 2007). 2011 was an incredibly huge year for us, and 2012 will be the same way.
