2001–2007: THE BUILDING YEARS The dot com bubble had burst. SEEING THINGS FROM THE VC SIDE OF THE TABLE While I was a VC in 2007 & 2008 those were dead years because the market again evaporated due the the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). Until we weren’t. Nobody cared about our valuations any more.

I become a venture capitalist in September 2007 – exactly 6.5 Working with early-stage teams : coaching, mentoring, setting strategy, rolling up sleeves: 9/10. years ago. As a result I didn’t write my first venture capital check until March 2009 – exactly 5 years ago. Sourcing high-quality leads : 9/10.

I started in 2007 with a thesis that my primary investment decision would be about the team (70%) and only afterward about the market opportunity (30%). This is when founders need you the most – either are coach, mentor, interviewer, work off-loader or honest-mirror-reflection of reality. Co-founder discontent.

What Are You Waiting For: Do It Now – A very dear man and mentor to me, Mike Schuminsky, had a very special way of managing folks. Success comes to those who are able to stay in the game the longest.

And Coach Campbell. I’ve heard directly from top executives that Jeff Bezos (in my opinion the most talented person in the tech industry) has received his fair share of VC coaching in the early years. And hard for me to imagine the Fred Wilson and Albert Wenger weren’t instrumental mentors to David. Ergo I suck.
