Two Southern California firms have made Advertising Age's annual list of the largest search marketing agencies, released last week. Santa Monica-based The Search Agency , which is headed by David Hughes, was listed at number 12, and San Diego-based Covario , which is run by Russ Mann, was listed at number 25.

Santa Monica-based The Search Agency joins a number of privately held, Southern California firms this week reporting strong growth in 2009. The firm said the growth came as a result of increasing demand for the firm's online marketing services. The Search Agency is backed by private equity firm JMI Equity.

The firm said the funding came from Bessemer Venture Partners and DAG Ventures, and will go towards sales and marketing. Convertro develops a non-cookie-based tracking technology that helps marketers better track and analyze their customers, and helps to better target and optimize ad campaigns. The firm is based in Santa Monica.

Santa Monica-based Demand Media , the online media firm run by Richard Rosenblatt, has finally filed for its long awaited IPO. Morgan Stanley, UBS Investment Bank, Allen & Company LLC, Jefferies & Company, Stifel Nicolaus Weisel, RBC Capital Markets, Pacific Crest Securities, Raine Securities, and JMP Securities.

I tragically lost my mom to cancer, my girlfriend (who I was living with at the time) and I broke up, and then my team and I were laid-off when the market crashed in 2009. Until I was fortunate enough to secure a job with Ron Burkle at the end of 2009. The first three years were fantastic, but my fourth year was very tough.

Sam Teller: Launchpad is an accelerator in Santa Monica. We were founded in 2009 by Mark Suster from GRP Partners. For two years, it was a mentorship program, that worked with twenty three different companies, but did not have a fund, did not have an office, and didn't take any equity.
