Way back in the early eighties, I was privileged to be part of the original IBM PC development team, led by Don Estridge. For example, even though we were leading an entrepreneurial effort within IBM, we found it a challenge to deal with the inbred mainframe culture, reverence for process, and accounting practices of a large company.

No matter how passionately you believe that everyone needs one, and positive feedback from friends and early adopters (false positives), before you invest in scaling the business, make sure you set and meet good metrics in cost of customer acquisition, recurring sales, and margin. Mergers and acquisitions also require new skills.

The exit through acquisition by ReliaQuest is the first of what we expect will be many exits for our Fund 1 portfolio. Due to this, seed rounds have become more competitive, with more expensive valuations and more oversubscribed rounds. We also had our first exit for Moonshots Capital Fund 1 --Threatcare.

In the last couple ofyears, we've seen more enterprise technology and software locally here, and software is starting to grow up. The LIDAR, the sensors, the software, what's been developed for and by the aerospace industry, JPL, and local universities. They are very acquisitive. That will cause a real boom in M&A.

I have seen this happening firsthand from my years of experience in several big-name companies, including IBM and Fujitsu. In software, hackers love the intellectual challenge of confronting a system designed to do one thing and cleverly exploit it to achieve something different. Loves to “hack” new outcomes from existing systems.
