The company--which has operations in Los Angeles, but is headquartered in China--said BYD has signed a "Community Benefit Agreement" (CBA) which aims to recruit and hire 40 percent of its workers in Lancaster from such disadvantaged groups as veterans, women, and African Americans. Specific terms of the agreement were not announced.

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Thursday afternoon that it has approved a deal to buy its first electric buses, from BYD Motors. Chinese electric auto firm BYD recently opened up a Los Angeles area headquarters to head up its efforts in the U.S.
