In just the last few weeks, at least five different incubation/acceleration efforts have booted up in the region. Specifically targeted at clean techonlogy firms, the group has more of a traditional incubator program, offering up office space for 6-8 companies, along with support, resources, and mentorship.

The new group, The Tech CEO Network , said it is looking to help bridge between the technology present at local schools like Caltech, UCLA, USC, UC Irvine, and other universities, and actual, viable companies. The founders of the group, Richard Koffler and John Morris , are two well known investors in the Los Angeles area.

How is this different than accelerator or incubator? David Carter: There is a lot of misunderstanding on what an incubator is, and what an accelerator is. When I was at Amplify, we had a lot of people wondering what an accelerator was, and how we differentiated from an incubator. That''s why creative people seek out Los Angeles.

I then became and EIR at UC San Diego, and joined EvoNexus, the not-for-profit incubator run by the Irvine Company. So, despite their rivalries and silos, people have come together, and we now have all 5 UC campuses in Southern California, plus Caltech, Harvey Mudd, USC, UC San Diego, and others involved.

Be Great Partners , a Los Angeles technology incubator, has recently released a report on the startup community in LA and the information shows a positive growth for startups here in LA. Pasadena another growing startup community, has startups focusing mainly on business products and services and sciences.

Alex Benzer: We're building SocialEngine in parallel, and working on a new, software-as-service version. It's a casual setupit's not an incubator, it's not an accelerator, and we're not charging anyone for space. I was really into graphic design in high school, and took several summer workshops at Caltech.
