They are quick to point out that many of today’s top entrepreneurs, including Evan Williams (Twitter), Bill Gates (Microsoft), and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), dropped out of school to get on with their dreams. Take advantage of free startup programs and mentors. Good business basics are not intuitive.

In a very real sense, we funded him, and he superseded even IBM. For example, most people think Mark Zuckerberg built Facebook all by himself. Bill Gates , for example, shared a common curiosity and mentoring relationship with Warren Buffet, although their business domains were quite different.

It’s easy to declare yourself an entrepreneur, but it’s not so easy to convince investors, your team and customers that you are that special one to fund and follow. A winning startup is built by an entrepreneur as an embodiment of who you really are rather than an artificial façade built on the myths around Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg.

Based on my experience as a mentor and an entrepreneur, if you fail on your first startup, you are about average. Intellectual property is also often the largest element of early-stage company valuations for professional investors. In reality, investors fund people, not ideas. That’s not bad, but who wants to be average?
