The formation of Hulu was defensive – designed to stop another YouTube or Napster from emerging and causing disruption to the TV industry. The idea was that if you could put up a consumer site that was seen as the best place to consume content then people wouldn’t go to lower-quality or free sites to get it. Here is my case: 1.

My firm GRP Partners recently funded a young LA based company named Ad.Ly that is an “in-stream advertising&# company currently focused on monetizing Twitter. Traditional media companies published their stories on the web. Advertising is also what allows you to watch Hulu for free, use Yahoo! Then came blogs.

Why Africa in terms of why did we set the company up there? It wasn’t really a case of ‘convincing’ anyone – our hedge fund partners, Tiger Global, approached us having read about us in TechCrunch and saw the significant potential in the company. Naturally, there was a stringent due diligence process, and this took a couple of months.
