There were startups and a software industry but barely. I started my first company in 1999 and was admittedly swept up in all of this: Magazine covers, fancy conferences, artificial valuations and easy money. I was in it for the love of working with entrepreneurs on business problems and marveling at technology they had built.

PayDivvy , unveiled today at the Finovate Conference in San Francisco, was conceived a few years ago while Mike Melby was attending the Wharton School of Business. His idea and subsequent business plan won the Wharton Venture Award in 2009 and was a finalist for the Wharton Business Plan Competition.

A few months ago I wrote about an entrepreneur, Sam Rosen, whom we brought on as an EIR at Upfront Ventures. His message was that he realized he needed to move his girlfriend’s stuff into a storage facility due to apartment flooding. Now remember that Sam is an entrepreneur. They built the software. I felt bad.
