It isn’t the biggest secret that the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans and the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) Bruins aren’t the best of friends, especially on the football field. On Sunday, March 2 nd at USC, these rivals took their battle to a new platform: startups.

According to Pasadena-based green marketplace firm OnGreen , the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), UC Los Angeles (UCLA), and University of Southern California (USC) scored a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to help foster student entrepreneurs via a business plan competition run by the group called First Look West.

Los Angeles-based Tilofy (www.tilofy.com)--out of USC''s Viterbi Startup Garage--is doing just that, helping to highlight what is going on around you, by absorbing all of that location data out there at any particular time and place. My degree is from USC in big data. As you probably know, Viterbi is the engineering school at USC.

What is the idea behind the Tech CEO Network? The Tech CEO Network is there to fill the gap. That technology is coming out of USC's biomedical department, which is part of its School of Engineering. It's trying to determine if there is a viable way to go to market, and also deal with competitive issues.

A number of teams have recently been looking to turn that vision into reality, as a result of the Qualcomm Tricorder Prize , a $10M competition being run by the X Prize Foundation to create a real life Tricorder. That''s essentially how the Tricoder competition was formed--it''s time for this to happen. So, it was not a good situation.

Over the past few months I've been building my networking, and we've done about a deal a month so far. I think the right team and network are very important, as is traction, validated by customers. Both Waxman and Elbaz are serial entrepreneurs, with many successes under their belt (Elbaz with Applied Semantics, which he sold to Google, Waxman with such companies as Firefly Networks, SpotRunner, and PeoplePC). I was just at USC yesterday, and they''re really focused on great things in science in engineering.
