Let’s assume that you’re a reasonably well-connected person, you have a strong network of friends & colleagues who work in the technology sector and you have many friends who are investors either professionally or as individuals. And of course the 7 or 8 deals would be different from the 4 or 5 you first saw and were ready to fight for.

Over the course of the first few months I saw a few people out on the street taking Birds and then a steady uptick in riders. Ah, but Bird doesn’t have network effects! There is nothing viral! Anybody can launch a scooter service! Not really. This allowed Bird to then raise $300 million from some of the top VCs in the country.

Of course, many would argue that more fundamental innovations, or paradigm shifts, take a long time and cost more money, but from my perspective, these are what really move our society forward. Great entrepreneurs cross industry boundaries to find synergies, and are constantly in learn mode on several fronts.
