I acted as the occasional mentor, advisor and coach to Ethan. So I asked Ethan to build his product first and then we would fund.

Our founder, Yves Sisteron, was my mentor and board member at my first startup. And the fact that we’ve all worked for a decade with Dana Kibler who is our long-time CFO and now helping run Investment Operations & Platform Services we have a truly senior & killer internal team. Mafias matter a lot to me, as well.

That's funding our new product, FanMix, which is a a social media tool. Alex Benzer: We're building SocialEngine in parallel, and working on a new, software-as-service version. We have some great mentors now. It's actually uncommon to have a female CTO. We're fortunate we've been able to fund that from SocialEngine.

By the end of my sophomore year, I decided to go after this full time, and that's when I officially brought on a CTO, Shiv Prakash, and we went at it in the summer of 2011, and the rest is kind of history. Both have been great mentors ever since. Was that investment how you decided to drop out of school to launch the service?

In my case, I had a mentor at the time who helped me understand how there was a parallel between the printing press and the Renaissance, and the Internet as the next step in information and communications. After that, I was CTO of Blackline Systems, and was responsible for behind-the-firewall. What are your backgrounds?
