I’ve been having discussions with several people recently about the role of the CTO (Chief Technology Officer) in very early stage companies. In December 2007, I described how I commonly take on an Acting CTO Role in a Start-up. That’s why Roger Smith puts the focus of the CTO on programming for the earliest stage.

Eric Sikola is CEO of ExpenseBay (www.expensebay.com), a Los Angeles-based, online, software-as-a-service startup which has created an online application which uses Web 2.0 technology to make submitting expense reports extremely easy. finance software such as Wesabe and Mint, and applied it to the corporate expense area.

I seem to encounter a lot of people who want to attach a CTO label to me as I'm the only programmer on the founding team of three. While I do fill that role at the moment, I'm a little hesitant to refer to myself as a CTO as we still haven't launched a product, acquired a single user, or turned or a penny in profit. Accounting?

The consumer piece is a big part of our business, and the next big piece is the advertiser platform, plus everything we wrap around the advertiser experience, helping them to manage their content, and provide great reporting, and helping them to understand the ROI of doing business with us. Another called Parker Harris, the co-founder and CTO. The only other ways to get discovered was to have good organic search results or to get covered by a major blog site. We have also been very busy with our next release, which is due out by December 11th (but I’ll save that for a different post). And covered we did.
