For today's interview, we spoke to Dave Eastman, the Director of the Viterbi Startup Garage, a startup incubator that is run by the University of Southern California, out of its location in Marina Del Rey. How are you different from other startup incubators, etc? It's not entirely exclusive, however.

Those three organizations have very strong networks inventure capital, entertainment, and academia, and put together the incubator. We now have a team of nine engineers and scientists, with experience from companies like IBM, Demand Media, and Google, all part of our core engineering team. An example of that is the UCLA flood.

One of the companies on that journey is Los Angeles-based Carbonics (www.carbonics.com), which is taking technology developed in the labs of USC and UCLA, and bringing it to use in the wireless semiconductor market. So this would have been a lot more difficult if those labs weren't available to you as a company in the incubator?
