With my software background at IBM, I’m well aware that technical early adopters value more and more features, and are able to deal with complexity. Growing too fast kills many new ventures, due to staffing costs, inventory, and funding delays. Gather your resources before scaling the business.

Way back in the early eighties, I was privileged to be part of the original IBM PC development team, led by Don Estridge. For example, even though we were leading an entrepreneurial effort within IBM, we found it a challenge to deal with the inbred mainframe culture, reverence for process, and accounting practices of a large company.

In no expert in Seattle but when I look around I see: enterprise software (Microsoft), the market leader in cloud services (Amazon AWS), games (Xbox), some of the most innovative retailers in the country (CostCo, Starbucks, REI) and what is left of Boeing (HQ moved to Chicago). It’s great to see an initiative like Seattle 2.0

That is excluding a single line of code or paying any salaries. To this day I’m astounded that IBM, Google, Sun, Microsoft and others didn’t offer this service and Amazon did. Physically printed books or CDs with editors, reviewers and a centralized system are inherently slower and in many cases not even more accurate.
