Amazon Eyes Alexa Team Hiring In Santa Barbara

Amazon is in a major expansion in Santa Barbara, with plans to hire as many as 300 people in a new, three story downtown location, all working as part of the Amazon Alexa team. Amazon's new space, at 1001 State Street, is expected to draw workers from UC Santa Barbara, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and other local universities, as well as from the region's existing supply of technology companies.

ecoATM Gets New Investor

San Diego-based ecoATM , which develops automated kiosks for smartphone and other electronics trade-ins, said this morning that Cowen Sustainable Advisors has agreed to acquired a "significant minority stake" in the company, for $200M. According to ecoATM, Cowen Sustainable Advisors acquires the stake from Apollo Funds, which are managed by affiliates of Apollo Global Management, the company's majority owner.

Los Angeles-based Retina has raised $2.5M more in funding, the company announced on Tuesday. The funding came from prior investor Crosscut Ventures. Retina develops customer lifetime value software which companies used to determine how much their customers are worth to them, helping them to optimize their cost-per-acquisition. The company's CEO is Michael Greenberg.

FuelRod Expands Mobile Charging To SeaTac

San Diego-based Tricopian , which operates the FuelRod mobile smartphone and tablet charging service, says it has expanded to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The company said the airport is the first for the company in the Pacific Northwest. The company says its service revolves around a "charge on the go" model which lets users pick up battery packs at kiosks, and turn them in for freshly charged battery packs at its various kiosks as they travel.

San Diego-based Plex Pharmaceuticals , which is developing antiviral drugs, says it has been awarded a $600,000 Phase I Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant, specifically to develop antiviral drug candidates for the treatment of Dengue (DENV) fever, West Nile Virus (WNV) and Zika Virus (ZKV) infections. The grant came from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
